The Lloyd Theatre and a Giveaway!

Another fabulous place to stop at in Menominee, MI, is the old Lloyd Theatre.

During WWII, the basement of the Lloyd was a grocery store, the first floor the theatre, and the above floors a factory. My grandma worked there, making helmets for the soldiers. They are in the process of turning the factory levels into condos.

The actual theatre part is now an antique mall — and they have everything!!!

If you want to deck your place out in vintage furniture, gadgets, and linens then the Lloyd is your one stop.

Vanities are everywhere — and so reasonably priced! I found my dream vanity, but had no way to get it back to Maryland. :(

Two wonderful treasures I did find were this lovely cream-colored purse:

The inside is in perfect condition! Total cost: $4.00!

And this bracelet:

It's hard to see in a picture, but it's inscribed on the sides "Souvenir Okinawa", and the double hearts in the front are inscribed 1945 Helen, and on the inside of the band "From John". It cost $10.00, but I couldn't leave it behind. Who is Helen? What happened to John? Just a simple bracelet but so full of someone's personal history.

And now for the giveaway! Yay!

In the kitchen section of the Lloyd, I came across a copy of Betty Crocker's "Your Share" recipe book from 1943. I own a copy and had posted some recipes from it previously. This is a wonderful little book if you want to know more about rationing, how they made it work, the recipes they used, etc. It has guides for parties and entertaining in war time, meal plans for breakfast through dinner, the "victory lunch box meal" guide, and SO much more.

  1. It looks like heaven! Complete heaven! I love the picture of the old stove, and you know, I have always wanted a vanity too! (And yes-definitely one with a round mirror!) Several times family members have had one to give away but I didn't live close enough to go get it. And like you, I've seen them in antique stores but had no way to get one home. Some day you and I will both have one though!

Thanks for sharing the story about your grandma. That alone would have made it very special for you to visit the Lloyd Theatre, and you found some amazing treasures too! I also wonder who Helen and John were.

Sign me up for your give away! What a wonderful little recipe book:) Now all I need if I win is that little stove...

Also-I was so glad to see this new post from you today:)

  3. Thanks, Valerie! I've been away from the blog world for quite a while — too long, actually. "Helen" and "John" sound like good characters for some of your future fiction, maybe? ;)

  4. I had the same idea-I think I will write a story about them (and when I do, may I "borrow" your picture of the bracelet? I'll link back to your blog too!) :)

  5. I'm in! I've been to Menominee, but never stopped there- next time for sure!

I found a similar bracelet once at a yard sale, but this was from the European theater (marked "buzz bomb alley" in England). I believe it's made out of scrap aluminum from aircraft.

  6. Oh my goodness! That looks like an AMAZING place. My grandmother actually has a vanity like the one with the round mirror. It's sitting in her basement right now, but I SO want to take it home with me. :-)

Very cool contest! Thanks for having it!

  7. I came over from Valerie's!
I love that vanity. I have my grandmother's vanity, which I inherited.

I would love to win that cookbook, because sometimes I like to participate in Vintage Recipe Thursdays, which is hosted by Joy of Desserts. I usually use one of two vintage cookbooks I have, but yours sounds really intriguing.

  9. I would LOVE to add that cookbook to my collection! It sounds so interesting, I love to have older cookbooks and compare the recipes/ingredients to ones today, not to mention the advertising and advice, fingers crossed!
